New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
